Summer Autumn medley

This massive double-album is a quick history of indie rock, as imagined by lo-fi devotees Brady Burkett and Ryan Shaffer in Columbus, Ohio. Containing "four previously unrealized albums" and documenting "the rise and fall of a band that never was," the 40 songs on here are a bit much to digest, unless you enjoy combing through old Guided By Voices, Sebadoh and Pavement records, which no doubt many of you do.

Sixties garage and late-'90s indie rock inform the general logic, the singer exhibiting an affection for shameless hooks and warbly notes.  There's a marked progression in quality from early recordings like "Play the Tiger" and the loping pop of "Deep Colony Six," to more mature offerings like "Country Mile" and the clever "Proving Evolution." The mood of Midwestern porch parties and beer-soaked, late-night basement sessions oozes from the hissy spaces between the notes. Dark, upbeat, sloppy, tight -- this release covers all the bases.
